ALGIERS- On Saturday evening, the Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, convened a meeting with directors of national television channels to discuss the new program schedule for the month of Ramadan 2024. During the meeting, he emphasized the imperative of respecting the specificities of the sacred month and presenting programs that meet the expectations of Algerian viewers, as stated in a ministry press release.
At the outset of the meeting, Laagab stated that “this meeting is part of a series of discussions related to the program schedule for the month of Ramadan and follows the numerous complaints expressed in recent years by viewers, journalists, specialists, and many deputies.”
The Minister of Communication issued instructions to all television channel officials to respect the specificities of the holy month and present programs that meet the expectations of Algerian viewers, avoiding content that conveys violence, especially verbal. He reminded attendees that the new Information Law, particularly in Article 4, sets clear conditions for the media treatment of programs.
Laagab also stressed the imperative of respecting the articles of the new Law on Audiovisual Activity, now in effect, especially Articles 25 and 32, to avoid any media practices contrary to professional ethics. He emphasized that all television channel officials were involved in drafting the specifications and were obligated to comply with and respect all its clauses.
The minister further urged the directors of television channels to preview all programs to be broadcast during the month of Ramadan and involve experts, including political, economic, religious, and sports analysts, in the programs to prevent any breaches that may occur. Any such breaches would prompt the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual Communication (ARAV) and the supervisory ministry to take the necessary legal measures.
Additionally, Laagab instructed the highlighting of the southern provinces, both in terms of producing reports and programs on the region’s customs and traditions, and featuring profiles of personalities from the South. He encouraged the acquisition of programs produced by individuals from the region.
The officials of these channels expressed their appreciation for the meeting, expressing their commitment to implementing the provisions of the new laws in this regard. They also raised concerns about the development of audiovisual activity in Algeria, particularly the lack of advertising opportunities.
