ALGIERS-During a recent meeting with the Committee on Youth, Sports, and Community Activities of the People’s National Assembly, Minister of Communication Mohamed Laagab emphasized the necessity for intervention in sports media in light of recent analyses conducted on television channels. Laagab stressed that sports media had deviated from its intended role as a means of communication, prompting the ministry to step in to improve the performance of sports media.
Laagab revisited the obstacles encountered by the sports media industry, especially following the Algerian national team’s early exit from the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. He emphasized the significance of reiterating the role and duties of sports media, advocating for enhancements to guarantee more comprehensive coverage and analysis.
Moreover, Minister Laagab revealed that Algeria boasts over 600 media outlets across various categories, including 22 accredited sports newspapers, 8 accredited sports websites, and one dedicated sports television channel. As part of initiatives to commemorate World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, Laagab announced plans to name lecture halls in football stadiums after renowned sports journalists.
Furthermore, Laagab disclosed that the ES Sétif football club has become the first Algerian team to formally request the establishment of its own television channel, indicating a growing interest in expanding media presence within the sports sector.
The efforts outlined by Minister Laagab underscore Algeria’s commitment to enhancing sports media performance and promoting journalistic freedom within the country. These initiatives reflect a broader strategy to elevate the quality and reach of sports media, ultimately enriching the sports landscape and fostering greater engagement among audiences.
