Minister of Communication Laagab Supervises Inauguration of RT Arabic Channel’s Regional Office in Algeria

Algiers, December 9, 2023- In a significant move to bolster media ties between Algeria and Russia, Minister of Communication Dr. Mohamed Laagab oversaw the inauguration of a regional office for the Arabic-language channel Russia Today (RT) based in Algiers.
During the opening ceremony, Minister Laagab emphasized that the establishment of an RT Arabic office reflects the profound depth of media cooperation between Algeria and Russia. This collaboration, steeped in history, extends not only through media bureaus but also through media outlets visiting Algeria.
Dr. Laagab affirmed Algeria’s readiness to enhance collaboration and openness with international media, especially following the enactment of regulations governing the sector. He disclosed that over 30 correspondents are currently working for foreign media in Algeria, representing both Arab and Western countries.
The Communication Minister expressed hope that foreign media offices in Algeria would contribute to fostering healthy competition with local media. This, in turn, aims to provide diverse and targeted media content that serves the best interests of the country and elevates the professional standards of local channels.
Maya Manna, the Director of RT Arabic, highlighted the deliberate decision to launch a transition program between Russia and the Arab world from Algeria. She characterized the move as a strategic decision based on the robust relations between Algeria and Russia, emphasizing their strategic partnership.
The opening of the RT Arabic regional office signifies a commitment to facilitating greater media exchange and collaboration. Algeria welcomes the opportunity to engage in dialogue with international media, fostering a vibrant media landscape that reflects the diversity of perspectives and enhances the quality of content available to the public.
