Algiers, Algeria | October 25th, 2024 — Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, held a meeting on Thursday with Natasha Van Rijn, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Algeria, to bolster collaboration between Algeria and the UNDP, focusing on energy efficiency and the transition to renewable energy. According to a ministry statement, the discussions evaluated ongoing projects and explored future cooperation opportunities.
The talks highlighted current energy efficiency initiatives, particularly those in partnership with the National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalization of Energy Use (APRUE), with the UNDP providing technical expertise to support local efforts. The discussions emphasized broadening cooperation to include renewable energy projects, especially in solar photovoltaics, wind energy, and green hydrogen development, which aims to reduce carbon emissions within Algeria’s industrial sector. Additionally, they discussed promoting clean, sustainable transportation.
Ms. Van Rijn expressed her satisfaction with Algeria’s progress toward establishing a sustainable energy model aligned with its national energy policy and regional cooperation goals in Africa. She praised Algeria’s commitment to renewable energy and affirmed the UNDP’s readiness to expand technical support and partnerships, specifically in energy transition and governance.
This meeting marks a significant step in Algeria’s energy transition strategy, aiming to develop cleaner energy sources and reinforce its position as a regional leader in green energy.
