ALGIERS- Minister of Fisheries and Fisheries Productions, Ahmed Badani, chaired a national evaluative meeting today to assess the performance of the maritime fishing and products sector for the year 2023. The gathering, attended by ministry officials at central and local levels, took place at the Directorate of Maritime Fishing and Aquaculture for the Algiers Province.

Badani commenced the session by recalling the various incentives approved by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for the sector. These incentives reflect the significant importance accorded to the sector in the government’s action plan, fostering noticeable dynamism in recent times. Following this context, the minister presented an overview of some of the accomplishments during 2023.

In terms of overall production from maritime fishing, aquaculture, and red tuna fishing until November, the total production reached approximately 112,000 tons. This marks a 2% increase compared to the same period last year.

The sector aims to achieve around 15,000 tons of aquaculture production and 120,000 tons of maritime fishing in 2024.

Regarding shipbuilding, three large ships, each 35 meters long, were successfully completed using national capabilities. One of these ships was received in 2023, with an additional 12 large ships in progress, including a 42-meter ship—a first in Algeria.

In the domain of aquaculture, the report indicates the registration of 42 marine aquaculture farms, including two newly registered in 2023. Other projects are underway, such as the installation of floating cages in two farms in the capital for the first time. The sector also saw the cultivation of 21.5 million fish fry in floating cages in 2023, an increase from 19 million in 2022.

Additionally, 51 productive farms for freshwater aquaculture were registered, with ten new ones in 2023. The launch of 52 new projects is also underway.

In terms of training, the ministry reported that 12,515 students are enrolled in various schools and institutes within the sector. This includes the training of 2,092 farmers and youth in integrated fish farming with agriculture. The sector is also finalizing the legal framework to allow professionals to benefit from the “VAEP” professional experience accreditation mechanism, with preparations for its implementation before the end of the year.

Following the review and discussion of presentations from central and provincial directors, the minister concluded the session by providing practical guidance related to the sector’s priorities in the coming phase. These measures aim to accelerate work and enhance efforts to achieve sector objectives outlined by the end of 2024, aligning with the government’s action plan stemming from the commitments of the President.
