Minister of Hydraulics Urges Swift Completion of Sidi Aïch Wastewater Treatment Plant

ALGIERS- During a working and inspection visit to the Béjaia province, Minister of Hydraulics Taha Darbal has directed project officials overseeing the construction of the Sidi Aïch wastewater treatment plant to overcome all obstacles and expedite the delivery of the facility while adhering to international technical standards.
The minister emphasized the need to provide additional financial and human resources to the construction companies involved, emphasizing the importance of following a rigorous work schedule, either 8×3 or 10×2.
With a daily treatment capacity of 10,400 cubic meters, the wastewater treatment plant aligns with the sector’s action plan to increase wastewater treatment capacities. Once operational, it will play a crucial role in safeguarding the region’s groundwater from pollution, purifying water from the Soummam River for drinking purposes, and irrigating tens of thousands of hectares of agricultural land in the region, which has been facing reduced well water flows due to recent droughts in the Soummam Valley.
The primary objective of the project is the reuse of treated water for the irrigation of agricultural and industrial lands, aligning with the President’s directives to achieve an annual reuse rate of 60% of treated water.
Subsequently, the ministerial delegation inaugurated a project involving an artesian well in the municipality of Amizour. The newly commissioned artesian well is expected to benefit the communities of Barbacha and Amizour, contributing to the sustainable water supply in the region.
