Algiers, Algeria | February 2nd, 2025 — During a working visit to Tamanrasset, Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki inaugurated and inspected several strategic projects aimed at enhancing postal and telecommunications services in the region. His visit underscored the government’s commitment to expanding digital connectivity, improving service delivery, and supporting socio-economic development in Algeria’s southernmost province.
Expanding Connectivity and Enhancing Telecommunications Infrastructure
As part of efforts to strengthen Algeria’s telecommunications infrastructure, Minister Zerrouki visited the International Point of Presence (PoP) of Algeria Telecom in Tamanrasset, emphasizing its critical role in securing and expanding the trans-Saharan fiber-optic backbone network. This infrastructure is essential for enhancing digital resilience, ensuring seamless cross-border connectivity, and boosting economic integration with Africa.
The minister also inaugurated the new operational headquarters of Algeria Telecom in Tamanrasset, a facility designed to optimize service management and expand the reach of telecommunications across the province.
Bringing High-Speed Internet to Remote Areas
In line with the government’s objective to bridge the digital divide, Zerrouki launched a universal service project to connect 52 remote and sparsely populated areas to 4G mobile internet. This initiative seeks to:
- Expand internet coverage in underserved regions.
- Provide reliable telecommunications services to residents.
- Facilitate access to digital services, fostering economic and social inclusion.
By enabling thousands of citizens to benefit from high-speed mobile internet and telecommunication services, the project marks a decisive step towards reducing digital disparities in the southern regions.
Advancing Fiber-Optic Deployment for Faster Internet
As part of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives to accelerate the rollout of fiber-optic networks, the minister oversaw the replacement of outdated copper cables with modern fiber-optic lines. This transition is designed to:
- Drastically improve internet speeds.
- Ensure better service quality for both businesses and individuals.
- Strengthen Algeria’s digital infrastructure, particularly in key regions like Tamanrasset, which serves as Algeria’s gateway to Africa.
Currently, the fiber-optic coverage in Tamanrasset has reached 42%, a significant milestone that reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing digital inclusion and fostering regional development.
Strengthening Postal Services and Digital Payment Solutions
In an effort to modernize postal services and enhance financial accessibility, Minister Zerrouki inaugurated several key projects, including:
- The new regional postal headquarters, designed to improve operational efficiency and working conditions for employees.
- Newly built post offices in Amachouan and Adrarian, ensuring easier access to postal services for residents.
- The renovated post office in Abalessa, which has been fully rehabilitated to meet modern service standards.
Tamanrasset boasts one of the highest postal service densities in the country, with one post office for every 5,000 inhabitants. This efficiency will be further reinforced with the installation of nine additional ATM machines in the near future, expanding financial service accessibility for residents.
Strengthening Mobile Network Coverage and Promoting Digital Payments
During his tour, Zerrouki inspected the commercial agencies of mobile network operators, where he assessed ongoing efforts to enhance mobile coverage in the region. He urged telecom providers to continuously improve service quality and ensure broader accessibility for residents. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of promoting electronic payment solutions, aligning with Algeria’s digital transformation strategy.
Commitment to Accelerated Development and Service Excellence
Concluding his visit, Minister Zerrouki held a high-level meeting with local sector officials, issuing strict directives to expedite project implementation within designated deadlines. He reiterated the government’s unwavering focus on improving service quality, addressing citizens’ concerns, and ensuring that telecommunications and postal infrastructure contribute effectively to Tamanrasset’s overall development.
With these strategic initiatives, Algeria reaffirms its commitment to modernizing infrastructure, bridging the digital gap, and fostering sustainable development in its southern regions—a vision that aligns with the nation’s broader efforts to position itself as a leader in digital transformation across the African continent.
