Algiers, Algeria | November 04th, 2024 — Water Resources Minister Taha Derbal confirmed that initial tests for the groundwater transfer system from the Qatrani field to Béchar municipality will start on November 15. This project is set to provide a steady daily supply of drinking water to the region’s residents.

During his working visit to the Béchar province, Derbal emphasized that “starting from November 15, preliminary trials of the transfer system will commence, enabling the transport of 80,000 cubic meters of water daily from the Qatrani field to Béchar.” He added that this initiative ensures the “entire province” will benefit from a “daily” distribution of drinking water, reflecting the “genuine commitment of public authorities to address all aspects of citizens’ quality of life.”

The large-scale project, valued at over 32 billion DZD, includes the drilling and equipping of 26 wells. Minister Derbal inspected well number 28 in Beni Ounif municipality, located 200 kilometers from the province’s capital. The project infrastructure also includes a 213-kilometer pipeline toward Béchar, a 57-kilometer network for collecting well water, three major pumping stations, and a 20,000 cubic meter reservoir, all of which the minister reviewed during his visit.

Additionally, in a move to strengthen water storage facilities in Béchar, Derbal laid the foundation stone for a new 25,000 cubic meter water reservoir along Lahmar Road in Béchar municipality.
