ALGIERS- Health Minister Abdelhak Saïhi emphasized the importance of prioritizing mother and child health during the first national Mother and Child Health Day held at the Sofitel Hotel in Algiers. He underscored the government’s dedication to creating a protective environment for children from birth to adulthood, with prevention as a top priority.
Saïhi highlighted the progress made in patient care and health services, emphasizing the need to continue advancing toward set objectives. He stressed the importance of implementing various programs aimed at reducing maternal and newborn mortality rates. One key aspect of the strategy involves establishing a reference center for mother and child health in each province. Saïhi also emphasized the importance of accelerating the digitization of vaccination records to streamline activities related to mother and child protection, aiming to achieve zero deaths by 2030.
To monitor progress, Saïhi announced the organization of evaluation meetings every three months. He noted the President’s commitment to supporting the health sector, which has resulted in the unfreezing of projects and the initiation of new ones, demonstrating a strong political will that is essential for success.
Dr. Nouhou Hamadou, the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Algeria, also highlighted the significance of the national Mother and Child Health Day. He commended the Algerian authorities’ commitment to promoting maternal and child health since independence and reaffirmed WHO’s support for strengthening primary healthcare and preserving achievements in this area. Dr. Hamadou emphasized the importance of primary healthcare as a crucial element in improving maternal and child health outcomes.
Overall, the event underscored Algeria’s dedication to enhancing healthcare services for mothers and children and highlighted the collaboration between national and international stakeholders in achieving this goal.
