ALGIERS- During the opening of the 7th Cancer Information Exhibition, Health Minister Abdelhak Saïhi disclosed several key details, starting with the number of people affected by cancer in Algeria. The minister revealed that “47,000 cases were recorded in 2023” and assured that all individuals affected by cancer received care, emphasizing positive outcomes as a promising sign for the future.
Addressing journalists at the Safex Exhibition Palace, Saïhi stated that globally, more than 19 million people are impacted by cancer. He continued, saying, “In Algeria, we have 19 cancer treatment centers. Soon, they will be 21, as the centers in Chlef and Djelfa will be operational in a few days. They will be ready to receive patients, improving the care for cancer patients in these regions.”
Minister Saïhi highlighted the efforts made by the Algerian government and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the fight against cancer. “Our country has allocated over 2 trillion dinars to access the latest technologies and benefit from developed treatments. President Tebboune announced last month a 70 billion dinars support to the National Cancer Control Fund from 2024. The President has also appointed a National Committee for Cancer Control and Prevention under his direct supervision, providing detailed reports to his services to monitor and combat this disease,” he stated.
In conclusion, Saïhi revealed that the health sector employs 18,000 professionals dedicated to accompanying and caring for cancer patients.
