TINDOUF – During the opening of the 12th edition of the El-Mouggar International Exhibition in Tindouf, Minister of Trade and Export Promotion Tayeb Zitouni emphasized the Algerian government’s commitment to transforming the Tindouf province into a major economic hub. Zitouni underscored this vision against the backdrop of significant strategic projects in the region and efforts to bolster trade with neighboring countries, notably Mauritania.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the exhibition, Minister Zitouni highlighted the importance of the event as both an opportunity to strengthen ties with neighboring nations and as a premier economic rendezvous.
He noted that this year’s edition coincides with the launch of numerous strategic projects initiated by the President of the Republic within the region. These include the monumental Gara Djebilet iron ore mining project, the construction of the Tindouf-Béchar-Oran railway line, and the Tindouf-Zouérat road linking Algeria and Mauritania. Additionally, plans for border posts and a large-scale free trade zone between the two countries are underway.
Minister Zitouni outlined how these initiatives would pave the way for the establishment of a major economic hub in the region, positioning Tindouf as a pivotal junction to stimulate new commercial dynamics and strengthen bilateral relations, particularly with Mauritania. He highlighted Algeria’s efforts to promote bilateral trade by establishing a permanent exhibition of Algerian products in Mauritania and facilitating commercial exchanges through Algerian bank branches in the country.
Addressing a forum of Algerian-Mauritanian businessmen, Minister Zitouni noted that bilateral trade between Algeria and Mauritania reached record levels in recent years, reflecting the shared commitment of both countries to intensify and enhance economic cooperation. He cited significant growth in Algerian exports to Mauritania, totaling $414 million in the first eleven months of the previous year, marking an 82% increase compared to the previous year.
Non-hydrocarbon exports also surged to $62.19 million during the same period, a 51.7% increase year-on-year. Meanwhile, imports from Mauritania totaled $349.9 million, representing a significant increase of 91.2% compared to the previous year.
Minister Zitouni expressed optimism about further enhancing economic and trade exchanges between Algeria and Mauritania in the current year, building on the positive momentum observed in recent years.
