Mohamed Laagab Affirms Robust Support for Journalists with Full Resources to Cover the Crucial September 7 Polls

Algiers, Algeria | September 7th, 2024 —  Algeria is taking significant steps to guarantee extensive media coverage for the presidential election, providing exceptional support for both local and international journalists. In a move to strengthen transparency, Mohamed Laagab, the communication minister overseeing election logistics, confirmed today that the nation is fully prepared to facilitate smooth media operations for this pivotal political event.

During an inspection of the International Press Center, Laagab revealed that a remarkable 1,500 accredited journalists, including key technical staff, are set to cover the election. This group includes 100 foreign journalists from 19 countries, representing 50 prominent international media outlets, all of whom have been given full access to report directly from Algeria. In addition, 36 accredited foreign correspondents, already based in the country, will also contribute to the election coverage.

Laagab emphasized that Algeria has gone above and beyond to ensure that journalists have all the resources they need for their tasks. “We have ensured that studios, media equipment, and other critical facilities are readily available to enable the press to operate seamlessly,” he explained, adding that the election represents not only a major political milestone but also a demonstration of Algeria’s commitment to transparency.

“This presidential election is a significant turning point, not only for Algeria but for the journalism profession as well,” Laagab highlighted, pointing to the essential role the press plays in shaping democratic discourse. He noted that this election provides a unique opportunity for journalists to enhance their professional experience while covering one of the most crucial political events in Algeria’s recent history.

Laagab also underscored the critical importance of journalistic integrity, remarking that “objectivity is the foundation of responsible journalism, particularly during such a vital electoral process.” He urged media professionals to maintain impartiality, ensuring that the coverage remains credible and informative, both for the Algerian populace and the broader international community.
