Mohammed VI’s Initiative: A Mirage of Diplomacy Without Geopolitical Realism

ALGIERS- The Moroccan regime continues to believe in the diplomacy of compliments, especially those coming from African countries with no geographical borders or noteworthy diplomatic and economic relations with Morocco. Recent statements made by foreign ministers of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Chad, expressing their intent to join a recent initiative launched by King Mohammed VI, may be seen as an attempt to please the Moroccan monarch.
These diplomatic courtesies, however, are unlikely to materialize into meaningful alliances. The statements were made after a coordination ministerial meeting held in Marrakech, Morocco, with the participation of Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The meeting aimed to present a facade of unity, trying to appease King Mohammed VI, who announced the initiative on November 6, supposedly seeking to “enhance opportunities for economic transformation and regional communication.”
The regime’s propaganda machine attempts to utilize such initiatives, which often fizzle out, to further its resentment towards Algeria. The regime’s efforts to isolate Algeria and manipulate its failed endeavors to achieve the impossible are evident, using initiatives like these to broadcast anti-Algerian sentiment.
Even Bourita, the head of Morocco’s diplomacy, fell short and inadvertently revealed the true purpose behind Mohammed VI’s move, stating, “The initiative aims to enhance the access of sisterly countries in the Sahel region to the Atlantic Ocean.”
The question remains: how will these “sisterly countries” reach the Atlantic Ocean? It’s a mirage of imagination and illusion. In dreams, perhaps, but the reality presents a completely different logic. The geopolitical and historical context involving Algeria and Western Sahara cannot be ignored in the pursuit of such ambitious dreams, and the Moroccan monarchy’s attempts to bypass these realities through diplomatic gestures are bound to fail.
