ALGIERS- The Moroccan Human Rights Council expressed strong condemnation for what it deemed “harsh sentences” against several of its members, stating that such measures represent a further step into what it perceives as an “encroachment and siege” against the council.

In a released statement, the council remarked that the harassment faced by the Moroccan Human Rights Council extends beyond the deprivation of its central and branch headquarters. It now encompasses severe judicial rulings against activists in various branches, demonstrating an intensified effort to stifle defenders of human rights and impede their ability to address violations and transgressions.

The organization highlighted that these sentences affected activists in cities like Ben Slimane, Al Khnichat, Tahla, and Sidi Hadjadj, showcasing an increased clampdown on those advocating for human rights and obstructing their efforts to counter abuses.

The council unequivocally rejected the severe and weighty judgments against its activists, who volunteered to defend human rights. It called on the public prosecutor and the president of the Supreme Judicial Council to intervene, urging them to initiate an investigation to bring justice to the victims and ensure the independence of the judiciary. The council emphasized the importance of standing alongside human rights defenders rather than against them.

Furthermore, the council stressed the necessity of “permanently breaking ties with political imprisonment and trial by opinion, respecting human rights, particularly the right to freedom of opinion and expression.”
