ALGIERS- The Moroccan journalist Dounia Nouar, a host on France 24 news channel, finds herself in the midst of a heated backlash by some Moroccans for her use of the term “Western Sahara” instead of “Moroccan Sahara.” However, Nouar has staunchly defended her position, shedding light on the channel’s commitment to the United Nations’ terminology and referencing the usage of the same term by Al Jazeera.
Nouar’s choice of words has raised eyebrows among some Moroccans who staunchly support Morocco’s territorial claims over the region. However, it is essential to recognize that the United Nations itself refers to the disputed territory as Western Sahara, as opposed to Moroccan Sahara.
By adhering to the UN’s terminology, media outlets like France 24 and Al Jazeera aim to align themselves with the organization’ stance on the matter. Nouar’s dedication to presenting an unvarnished reality is both commendable and essential in a world where distorted information often muddies the waters of understanding.
To substantiate her argument, Nouar referenced former Moroccan Interior Minister Idriss Basri, who acknowledged Morocco’s use of the term “Western Sahara” in communication with the United Nations.
Noting that the United Nations unequivocally supports the right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people. Recognizing their legitimate aspirations and the historical context of their struggle, the UN firmly upholds their right to freely determine their political status and pursue their economic, social, and cultural development. Through various resolutions, the UN has consistently emphasized the importance of resolving the Western Sahara conflict in accordance with the principles of self-determination, decolonization, and respect for human rights. The organization remains committed to facilitating a just and lasting solution that respects the will of the Sahrawis, fosters regional stability, and upholds international law.
