Moroccan Journalist Omar Brouksy Criticizes King Mohammed VI’s Silence on Gaza Ongoing Aggression

ALGIERS- Renowned Moroccan investigative journalist, Omar Brouksy, currently in exile in France, has raised critical concerns over King Mohammed VI’s conspicuous silence regarding the ongoing war in Gaza. In an article published on Orient XXI, Brouksy delves into what he describes as a shrewd maneuver by the Moroccan government to navigate the complexities of normalizing relations with the Zionist entity while addressing the sensitivities around the Palestinian cause.

The journalist emphasizes the delicate situation faced by Morocco, especially given King Mohammed VI’s dual roles as the “President of the Al-Quds Committee” and the “Commander of the Faithful.” Brouksy contends that the Moroccan monarchy has strategically leveraged the Western Sahara issue, historically less significant for the Moroccan people, to offset the domestic backlash against normalization with the Zionist entity.

Brouksy highlights the turning point represented by the significant Hamas attack on the criminal entity on October 7, 2023, during what he terms the “Israel-Morocco honeymoon.” He argues that this event has the potential to significantly impact the praised “Israel-Morocco” relationship, lauded by both the United States and the European Union.

The journalist points out the predicament faced by the Moroccan monarchy due to its seemingly contradictory stance of maintaining close ties with the Zionist entity, viewed by many as perpetrators of injustice against Palestinians. Brouksy notes the paradox of the monarchy’s actions, particularly its suppression of the Islamist party PJD after signing the Abraham Accords, and the subsequent rise of the Justice and Charity Association, which opposes the monarchy’s religious legitimacy.

Expressing surprise at the silence of Moroccan leaders amid South Africa’s efforts to bring the criminal entity to the International Court of Justice for its aggression in Gaza, Brouksy questions the absence of a more substantial response from King Mohammed VI. He draws attention to the resumption of consular services between Morocco and the entity, announced by the Moroccan liaison office in Tel Aviv, signaling a rekindling of ties despite the October events.
