Algiers, Algeria | June 2nd, 2024 — Moroccan investigative journalist Omar Radi, who has been imprisoned since December 2020 on false charges, is reported to have been tortured in prison, raising concerns that he might not survive the remainder of his sentence, according to his family members.
In an interview published Thursday by the online newspaper Maghrebi, Radi’s family disclosed that Omar has been held in isolation for some time. They expressed their anxiety over the torture endured by political prisoners, which violates the United Nations Convention Against Torture.
Isolation and Surveillance
“Now, he is okay, mentally and physically. I mean, it’s not good to be in solitary confinement, but he prefers it over being with other people,” stated Driss Radi, Omar’s father. He added that his son has been prevented from joining other inmates for breaks and has been under constant surveillance by guards whenever he leaves his cell. The family voiced their deep concern for Omar’s safety, highlighting that all of his written materials are being confiscated.
Targeted for Criticism
Omar Radi, known for his critical stance against the Moroccan regime, has faced severe restrictions and harsh treatment. The family’s fears are compounded by reports from the newspaper citing multiple sources, which assert that Abdellatif Hammouchi, the head of Morocco’s intelligence services, is responsible for widespread torture of detainees and suppression of dissidents by the Moroccan security services, including the targeting of Omar Radi.
