ALGIERS- The Moroccan Justice and Development Party (PJD) criticized the performance of the interim government, labeling it as severely lacking and disappointing. They accused its leader, Aziz Akhannouch, of prioritizing his personal interests over governmental duties, citing conflicts of interest such as his involvement in the “Tindarat” field, where he doubled his wealth during the COVID-19 pandemic while others suffered losses.
During a press briefing to assess the government’s performance, Abdullah Buanou, head of the PJD’s parliamentary group, highlighted a crisis of legitimacy and trust plaguing the government since its inception. He lamented the erosion of institutional strength and a growing sense of managerial ineptitude.
Buanou criticized the concentration of power within the Prime Minister’s Office, particularly under the same party’s control, and noted an exclusionary approach in Parliament’s management. He also pointed out legislative chaos, improvisation, and hurried decision-making processes.
Addressing corruption concerns, Buanou emphasized a decline in public confidence in elected bodies and a perceived increase in corruption during the government’s tenure, coupled with unprecedented conflicts of interest.
The government’s track record, according to Buanou, has been marred by heightened social unrest, a lack of coherent vision, and a reluctance to undertake essential structural reforms. He criticized the government for neglecting human rights and freedoms in its policies and actions.
Driss El Azami El Idrissi, head of the PJD’s national council, highlighted discrepancies between the government’s policy objectives and its actual implementation, particularly regarding employment and unemployment reduction. He criticized the government’s reversal of customs measures aimed at protecting domestic products and the abrupt withdrawal of tax privileges for self-employed individuals without proper evaluation.
El Azami criticized the government’s decision to replace successful programs with new ones, leading to imbalances and instances of corruption affecting public projects, perpetuating societal fragility.
He concluded that the interim government led by Akhannouch has failed to fulfill most of its commitments, with only two out of ten partially realized. Unmet pledges include increasing economic growth, job creation, empowering women in the workforce, poverty reduction, promoting rural development, reducing social disparities, improving education, and formalizing the status of the Amazigh language.
