Moroccan Justice and Development Party Warns of Political, Economic Corruption, Urges Course Correction

ALGIERS- The Justice and Development Party (PJD) of Morocco has issued a warning about the alarming rise of political and economic corruption, emphasizing the need for urgent corrective measures. In the wake of recent scandals involving high-ranking officials, particularly the “Sahara Escobar Scandal,” the PJD asserts that Morocco stands at a crucial crossroads, requiring immediate action to rectify the political, democratic, party, and electoral trajectory.
In its political report presented before the National Council of the party over the weekend, the PJD declared that the nation is witnessing an unprecedented and escalating setback in public management, leading to a loss of trust in politics, politicians, and elected institutions. The party specifically highlighted the recent revelations in the “Western Sahara Scandal,” exposing influential political figures implicated in serious offenses.
According to the PJD, the current situation has sown doubt in the democratic process as a whole, emptying elections of their noble purpose and diminishing their symbolism and significance for citizens.
The party contends that the escalating crisis in public administration, citizen interests, and national and territorial affairs, coupled with the weakening of the Prime Minister’s office, the government, and the diminishing parliamentary performance, is primarily due to a government majority suffering from a lack of clear electoral legitimacy. The report points to a decline in competence and credibility in both words and actions, with the majority appearing disconnected from reality and beholden to lobby interests and corruption.
The party emphasized that this dire situation has led to a dangerous political vacuum and an unprecedented loss of confidence in politics, political parties, and all forms of institutional mediation. This reality has become evident through emerging protest movements, exposing the government’s isolation from public opinion and highlighting the falsehood of the government’s claim to have received five million votes, as proclaimed by the Prime Minister and his majority.
The report stressed that the misguided political approach adopted in the post-2016 elections and preparations for the September 8, 2021 elections has disrupted the foundations of party pluralism and marginalized national party institutions. It has instilled doubt in the minds of activists and citizens regarding the effectiveness of political and party engagement and the sincerity and seriousness of the electoral process as a whole.
The PJD concluded that this flawed approach has not only disrupted the democratic and developmental trajectory but has also compromised the accumulated achievements in solidifying democratic choices. The blurring of lines between money and political influence, coupled with financial and electoral corruption, has allowed a politically weak and absent government to dominate the political and governance landscape. The government’s inability to address economic, social, and sectoral issues has led to delays, confusion, a lack of proactivity, and a dearth of political acumen, resulting in the emergence of new social protest phenomena rejecting all forms of institutional mediation.
