Algiers, Algeria | September 3rd, 2024 —  Moroccan parliamentarian Nabila Mounib has launched a sharp critique of Morocco’s foreign policy, particularly targeting the U.S. recognition of the country’s so-called “autonomy plan for Western Sahara” and the controversial normalization of relations with the Zionist entity. Mounib, a former Secretary-General of the Unified Socialist Party, described the U.S. recognition of Morocco’s claims over Western Sahara as a “deception,” arguing that it serves more as a superficial diplomatic gesture than a substantial endorsement of Morocco’s position.

Her comments, made during an interview with Russia’s Sputnik news agency, challenge the Moroccan government’s portrayal of the U.S. recognition as a significant diplomatic victory. Mounib suggested that the move was a strategic ploy by the Trump administration to gain concessions from Morocco rather than a genuine shift in international policy. She further criticized the Moroccan government for leveraging this recognition while failing to achieve broader international support for its autonomy plan, highlighting the continuing ambivalence of the European Union and the United Nations towards the Western Sahara issue.

In addition to her critique of the Western Sahara policy, Mounib condemned Morocco’s normalization of relations with the Zionist entity, a decision closely tied to the U.S. recognition. She characterized the normalization as a betrayal of the Palestinian cause, a sentiment she asserts is widely shared by the Moroccan people. Mounib argued that the government’s justification for this move—advocating for a two-state solution—has proven to be an empty promise, further alienating the populace and undermining Morocco’s long-standing support for Palestine.
