ALGIERS – May 4, 2024- Moroccan opposition journalist Dounia Filali asserts that the Moroccan government’s policies toward its people have remained unchanged over the years, despite Morocco’s declining global rankings in various aspects.

Returning to her YouTube channel after a hiatus, Filali notes that Morocco has slipped from its position as one of Africa’s top 5 economies, falling to sixth place in 2024, behind South Africa, Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, and Ethiopia.

Filali further observes a decline in Morocco’s debt rankings, with significant increases in debt, indicating a degree of control over the economy by various international entities. She argues that the Moroccan populace is bearing the brunt of the government’s ineffective policies.

In this context, Filali highlights the regime’s tactic of using the Western Sahara issue to divert attention from economic and political crises and to distract Moroccans from their problems. Whenever internal challenges arise, the regime shifts focus to the Western Sahara, portraying it as the paramount issue.

The Moroccan regime, according to Filali, employs the Western Sahara issue to discuss “territorial integrity” and the conflict with the Polisario Front, asserting Moroccan claims over disputed territories. Anyone deviating from this narrative is labeled a “separatist.”

Contrary to this portrayal, Filali contends that Mohammed VI and his family are the true separatists in Morocco. She refers to Mohammed VI’s statement in August 2022, suggesting that Morocco’s international relations hinge on support for its Western Sahara proposal or a referendum on the Sahrawi people’s fate.

Filali notes Morocco’s withdrawal from the African Unity Organization in 1984 and its reapplication to join the African Union in 2017, with the condition of recognizing the sovereignty of all member states, including the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.

She highlights the official gazette of the Kingdom of Morocco, issue number 6539 for 2017, which confirms Mohammed VI’s approval of texts recognizing the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as a founding member of the African Union. Article 3 emphasizes defending the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of member states.

Filali concludes that the Moroccan regime either suffers from cognitive dissonance, espousing contradictory stances, or uses the Western Sahara issue solely to placate Moroccans and exploit their resources and wealth.
