ALGIERS- During a parliamentary session held at the House of Representatives, the Moroccan parliamentary opposition condemned the government led by Saad-Eddine El Othmani, accusing it of constitutional stagnation, marginalizing parliamentary work, and failing to meet its obligations outlined in the government program, consequently mismanaging various files.
Abderrahim Chahid, leader of the Socialist Group, asserted that the hallmark of the El Othmani government’s tenure has been the obstruction of the constitution and the suppression of political activity within institutions. Despite the Parliament being tasked with protecting the constitution and ensuring its implementation, it has been sidelined. Chahid emphasized that critical issues concerning citizens are neglected, with the Prime Minister attending only 11 out of 20 sessions he was expected to, resulting in the failure to address pressing matters affecting the populace.
Moreover, Chahid highlighted the government’s lack of accountability, with ministers frequently absent from parliamentary debates, undermining the institution’s oversight role. He criticized the government’s disregard for legislative proposals, noting that only three out of many proposals were partially addressed, threatening legislative integrity.
The People’s Movement leader, Driss Sentissi, echoed these sentiments, lamenting the government’s inefficiency as it failed to achieve even a quarter of its program objectives midway through its term. Sentissi criticized the government’s mishandling of several issues, including education, healthcare, and unemployment, asserting that promises made during electoral campaigns remain unfulfilled.
The opposition further condemned the government’s inflated self-assessment during the conclusion of the parliamentary session, which they deemed as an attempt to justify its absenteeism and lack of engagement. They accused the government of undermining institutional trust and seriousness, epitomized by its disregard for authoritative reports, such as the Council of Competition’s condemnation of fuel companies’ malpractices.
Abdellah Bouanou, head of the Justice and Development Party’s parliamentary group, emphasized that the prevailing theme of the El Othmani government’s tenure is “minimizing politics, dissipating institutional trust, and lacking seriousness.” He criticized the government’s mismanagement across various sectors and its failure to address corruption and conflicts of interest at the highest levels.
In conclusion, the Moroccan parliamentary opposition decries the El Othmani government’s track record of constitutional obstruction, political evasion, and failure to deliver on its promises, calling for accountability, transparency, and renewed commitment to the democratic process.
