Moroccan People Resurge with Vigor: Renewed Call to Overthrow Makhzen System
BY: Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS- In the aftermath of the disappointing performance of the Moroccan national football team in the African Cup of Nations, the Moroccan people have returned to the streets with renewed strength, demanding the overthrow of the Makhzen system. The whistle signaling the end of the match between South Africa and Morocco in the tournament held in Ivory Coast marked not only the defeat of the national team but also the end of the sedative effect football had on the population.
Football, once a diversionary tool to distract Moroccans from the harsh realities of their lives, has lost its charm. The sport can no longer overshadow the daily challenges of skyrocketing prices, scarcity of goods, and the collapse of purchasing power. These economic hardships are now haunting the ordinary Moroccan citizens who had been momentarily intoxicated by illusory victories in the inflated game of football.
The crumbling and bankrupt Makhzen regime lacks the resources and budgets to quell the furious masses who have awakened to its deceptive schemes and cunning tactics aimed at diverting attention from the minute details of their controlled reality.
The Moroccan people, following the resounding defeat suffered by their national team at the hands of Bafana Bafana, have decided to fill the streets once again. This time, their demands echo the accumulation of long-overdue social rights and the fulfillment of promises made by the deceitful and deferred government. Football, which previously allowed patience with the regime’s unfulfilled commitments, no longer holds sway.
The collapsing Makhzen regime relied heavily on football, seeking to prolong the state of distraction that began with the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and continued through the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Finally, the spell of this sedative has worn off, and Moroccans are now thinking seriously about returning to the streets in force.
The defeated Moroccan team has disrupted the Makhzen’s plans to control the streets, and the Moroccan people are contemplating organizing massive and widespread protests across all cities in the country. These protests will not cease until all their social and political demands are met, including an end to normalization and a clear, principled stance with the Palestinian people.
