ALGIERS- Moroccan journalist and former diplomat Ali Lmrabet revealed that the official Moroccan newspaper, the day after Morocco joined the African Union, featured the signing of the Constitutive Act of the Union, wherein Morocco explicitly acknowledged the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). The official Moroccan document also explicitly referred to the Sahrawi Republic as a founding state of the African Union.

In an extensive interview with the German newspaper “Yunca Welt,” Lmrabet emphasized the necessity of a political resolution between the conflicting parties, Morocco and the Polisario Front. He argued that such a resolution would benefit the future of the Maghreb region.

The interview delved into the origins of the conflict in Western Sahara, highlighting how Morocco navigated alliances with European colonial powers, disregarding the Sahrawi National Liberation Movement (Polisario) at times. Eventually, Morocco shared the Sahrawi territories with its neighbor Mauritania after distorting the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice.

Lmrabet also addressed the recent stance of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on the issue. He asserted that Moroccan occupation found support in the Spanish leader, who, despite openly criticizing Israel, appeared less assertive against Morocco. This was despite Sánchez being responsible as the head of the Spanish government for Western Sahara, where, according to international law, Spain remains the administering power, though with limited authority except in airspace matters. Lmarabet questioned how a country that claims to be a democracy, like Spain, could allow a foreign oppressive state to impose its will.

The writer further discussed the deteriorating human rights situation in Morocco, including the persecution of independent journalists and the imprisonment of individuals based on their opinions or social media posts. He characterized Morocco as a police state, with its prisons filled with political prisoners, journalists, and ordinary citizens merely expressing their views.

Lmrabet concluded by sharing his personal situation as an involuntary exile, not only deprived of practicing journalism but also denied the right to own property. He highlighted the challenges he faces, unable to stay in any hotel due to surveillance. Lmarabet recounted an incident where police officers climbed onto the balcony of his residence, stating that life in Morocco had become a constant intrusion.
