Algiers, Algeria | May 28, 2024 — The Moroccan government’s recent announcement regarding the “reform of the compensation fund,” which includes an initial hike in the price of large gas cylinders by 10 dirhams, has triggered widespread anger and criticism across the nation. This adjustment is part of a larger strategy aimed at phasing out subsidies entirely by 2026, with authorities asserting that it’s crucial for the effective implementation of a direct social support program. This program aims to better target needy families through a unified social registry.
However, the populace remains deeply skeptical of the government’s rationale behind this decision, perceiving it as an additional financial strain. Many citizens question whether this increase genuinely serves their best interests and aligns with the government’s purported agenda of promoting a social state, as advocated by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch.
Hussein El Yamani, a prominent figure in the Democratic Labor Confederation, vehemently criticized the move, casting doubt on the government’s claims. He expressed skepticism, particularly in light of ongoing strikes by health workers and continuous protests by medical and pharmacy students. El Yamani suggested that either the Moroccan health system is on the brink of collapse or conflicting interests seek to undermine the universal health coverage project, possibly to pave the way for the dominance of the private health sector.
The president of the National Front to Save the Moroccan Petroleum Refinery echoed these sentiments, questioning the government’s ability to discuss essential support for universal health coverage while medical and pharmacy students continue their prolonged strike. He highlighted the persistent discord within the health sector despite a social agreement signed between unions, the government, and employers.
El Yamani urged the government to engage in genuine dialogue with all stakeholders, eschewing the demonization of the student health movement. He stressed the imperative of ensuring the success of the national project for universal health coverage, which he believes is currently unattainable amidst the tensions between the government and health unions, as well as with medical and pharmacy students.
