ALGIERS-The Algerian authorities’ response to the Moroccan government’s decision to seize Algerian embassy properties in Rabat and incorporate them into the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has elicited varied reactions within Morocco. This comes particularly in light of a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, which explicitly issued a threat against what Algeria described as provocative practices and behaviors.

In the first official response from the Moroccan government, Moroccan media outlets have reported details of the concerning decision that will widen the gap between Algeria and Morocco. The Moroccan government, wary of potential Algerian escalation, emphasized its commitment to abide by legal protocols within its jurisdiction, as well as international laws and agreements, including the Vienna Convention, which mandates the protection of embassies and diplomatic missions. Algeria has accused the Moroccan regime of violating this convention.

In an attempt to defuse the crisis between the two countries, sources revealed that King Mohammed VI offered a gesture of reconciliation to Algeria. The monarch acquired 5000 square meters of land with the intention of constructing a new Algerian embassy in a highly esteemed location. This move was made in exchange for Algeria relinquishing its old properties adjacent to the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

However, reports indicate that Algeria rejected the offer to vacate its current premises in favor of the new ones provided by King Mohammed VI.

Observers speculate that the Moroccan regime is reluctant to escalate tensions with Algeria, fearing a strong response from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This cautious approach explains the careful handling of the situation by the Moroccan authorities, especially given King Mohammed VI’s insistence on providing new properties for Algeria, as reiterated through both private and public channels.
