ALGIERS | November 21, 2023- Morocco, under the reign of King Mohammed VI, is undergoing an unprecedented period of turbulence. The King’s decision to support the Zionist entity in its crimes against the Palestinian people, backed by the Makhzen, has triggered a wave of internal dissent, met with a firm crackdown that raises questions about the monarchy’s future in a country aspiring to democracy.
Controversial Royal Decision on Israel Normalization
The normalization of relations with the Zionist entity, announced in December 2020, was perceived as a betrayal by a significant portion of the Moroccan population deeply committed to the Palestinian cause.
The Makhzen, a pillar of power in Morocco, played a crucial role in adopting this policy. By supporting the King’s decision, it not only bolstered Mohammed VI’s position but also contributed to shaping the kingdom’s foreign policy.
Alarming Reality of Repression in the Face of Pro-Palestinian Protests
The government’s response to pro-Palestinian demonstrations has been marked by severe repression. Law enforcement, often under direct orders from the Makhzen, deployed tear gas, water cannons, and occasionally rubber bullets to disperse crowds. Reports have emerged of arbitrary detentions, beatings, and intimidation of protesters.
Protesters, like Amina, a student from Rabat, recount the brutality of interventions: “We were peaceful, but the police charged us without warning. I saw people injured, some arrested for no reason. It’s terrifying.”
This repression has had a profound impact on Moroccan civil society. Human rights organizations denounce violations of fundamental freedoms and a democratic setback. Fear has set in, but so has an increased determination among some to continue fighting for their rights.
Morocco on the International Stage
Morocco’s support for the Zionist entity has reshaped its positioning in the Arab world and beyond. This decision has not only created tensions with other Arab nations but has also highlighted Morocco’s strategic alliances with Western powers.
Once a key player in the Arab world in support of Palestine, Morocco risks isolation within the Arab League, jeopardizing its historical relationships and regional alliances.
Debate Over the Monarchy
The current crisis has reignited the debate on the relevance of the monarchy in Morocco. While some see it as a pillar of stability, others view it as an obstacle to the full expression of popular will and the emergence of true democracy.
King Mohammed VI’s decision to support the criminal entity, despite popular opposition, raises questions about the monarchy’s legitimacy. Can it continue to reign while ignoring the aspirations of its people?
