Transparency Morocco Condemns the Absence of Serious Anti-Corruption Efforts as Rankings Plummet
Algiers, Algeria | February 23rd, 2025 — Morocco remains mired in systemic corruption, with Transparency Morocco denouncing the persistent entrenchment of bribery and the glaring absence of genuine political will to combat the scourge. Despite years of rhetoric on anti-corruption measures, the country has failed to implement substantive reforms, allowing corruption to metastasize across institutions and erode public trust.
An extensive analysis conducted by Transparency Morocco underscores the enduring nature of this phenomenon. Over the past decade, the country has demonstrated a fluctuating but ultimately regressive trajectory in global corruption rankings. In 2012, Morocco stood at the 88th position on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). While some marginal improvements were recorded—reaching its best ranking of 73rd place with a score of 43 points in 2018—this progress proved ephemeral.
Since then, Morocco has been on a downward spiral, suffering a continuous decline both in ranking and score. By 2024, the country finds itself languishing at the 99th position with a feeble score of 37 points, marking a loss of five points and a staggering 26 places compared to 2018. These numbers reflect not only a deteriorating anti-corruption framework but also a lack of concrete governmental action to address the deeply rooted crisis.
Experts have long sounded the alarm on Morocco’s entrenched corruption, citing impunity, weak institutional oversight, and a justice system susceptible to political interference as primary drivers of the worsening situation. Despite multiple high-profile corruption scandals surfacing over the years, meaningful accountability remains elusive, further emboldening corrupt networks.
