ALGIERS- In a recent turn of events, Morocco, which normalized its relations with the Zionist entity in 2020, finds itself in a precarious diplomatic position as both Jordan and Bahrain have recalled their ambassadors from Tel Aviv in protest against the ongoing events in Gaza. This places the Kingdom of Morocco in a delicate situation, caught between its support for the Palestinian cause and its alliance with the Zionist entity.
Recalled Ambassadors by Jordan and Bahrain
The Kingdom of Jordan, a nation that had previously established diplomatic ties with the Zionist entity, became the first Arab country which normalized their ties with the entity to take concrete measures in response to the recent events in Gaza. After condemning the Zionist airstrikes on Gaza and the resulting civilian casualties on numerous occasions, Jordan announced the recall of its ambassador to Tel Aviv on November 1st.
Bahrain followed suit, announcing the recall of its ambassador to Tel Aviv and the departure of the Zionist ambassador from Al Manama on November 2nd. Additionally, the Bahraini parliament declared the suspension of commercial relations with the entity.
These actions underscore the mounting pressure exerted by certain Arab countries on those that have normalized their relations with the Zionist entity, especially as this latter continues its extensive airstrikes on Gaza.
Morocco’s Delicate Position
Morocco, the most recent Arab nation to normalize its relations with the Zionist entity in 2020, now finds itself in an increasingly uncomfortable position. While the Zionist military continues its airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, the Moroccan royal palace has refrained from taking a strong public stance.
The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed “great concern and deep indignation” over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, denouncing Zionist actions as contrary to international humanitarian law.
However, unlike Jordan and Bahrain, Morocco has not announced concrete diplomatic measures in response to the crisis. The Cherifian Kingdom has refrained from publicly criticizing Israel, its new ally.
Morocco Under Pressure
The situation is becoming increasingly challenging for Morocco, the sole country among the normalization agreements not to have taken concrete actions in response to the Gaza situation. Pro-Palestinian demonstrations are multiplying in Morocco, and Moroccan diplomacy is confronted with a delicate dilemma, attempting to appease both the Zionist entity and its international image as a supporter of the Palestinian cause.
