ALGIERS- Recent data reveals that the suspension of dozens of teachers in Morocco by regional directors of education and training, coupled with the indifference of government officials to teachers’ protests, has left over 2,000 classrooms without educational services. The disruptions come as teacher coordination groups decided to temporarily halt their strikes and protests that began on October 5, 2023.
Over 1,200 teachers have received suspension orders from regional directorates and academic regions, impacting students in subjects such as mathematics, physics, social studies, Arabic language, life sciences, and economics at the secondary level. The majority of affected classrooms are in the preparatory years, including the first and second years of high school, the third year of middle school, and the sixth year of primary school.
Despite the teacher coordination groups temporarily suspending their strike program for the current week, the Unified Coordination of Teaching Staff and Support Personnel issued a national statement cautioning against repeating the failure to address grievances comprehensively. The statement warned that the unified coordination would resume its protest program with unprecedented escalation if arbitrary suspensions were not lifted, illegal salary deductions for strikers were reversed, and legitimate demands were met.
Meanwhile, the National Office of the National Union of Education Employees, a member of the National Union of Labor in Morocco, has called for legal actions against what they deem arbitrary decisions to suspend hundreds of teachers. The union emphasized the legal flaws in the application of Article 75 of the General Public Service Law and criticized the lack of response to proposed mediations by the responsible ministry.
The union outlined the conditions for legal actions, emphasizing the urgency of the situation due to the potential negative impact on the professional and family lives of the affected employees. The second condition stressed the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation of documents and adherence to fair trial conditions.
As tensions persist and legal challenges loom, the education system in Morocco remains in a state of uncertainty, with students and teachers caught in the crossfire of a standoff between educators and the government.
