Morocco in Turmoil: Fall of Monarchy Amidst Economic Crisis, Social Unrest

BY: Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS- Amidst the rubble of the village of Tagadirt, where homes lay in ruins after the September 8th earthquake, the cries of despair from Moroccan citizens echo through the streets. “All we need is a little food and water. We have nothing left. We have nowhere to sleep in this freezing cold that has already claimed hundreds of lives. The luckiest among us sleep under tents, while others brave the elements under the open sky, amidst the snow,” lamented residents.

The earthquake laid bare the stark poverty facing the Moroccan people. The majority struggle to survive below the poverty line, with many succumbing daily to hunger and cold. The kingdom teeters on the brink of collapse, emboldened by the support of the Free Officers Organization, now a dominant force within the royal army, Moroccans flood the streets and social media with a plea for help: the Moroccan people are in mortal danger.

Weekly protests denouncing poverty, dictatorship, and predatory monarchy herald the beginning of the end for this medieval regime. The reign of the controversial absentee king is now in its death throes.

In a desperate attempt to quell dissent, the monarchy has, for the first time in its history, announced a monthly social aid package of 500 dirhams, approximately 45 euros, to enable millions of Moroccan families to purchase basic necessities. However, this gesture may prove too little, too late.

This feeble attempt to appease the masses will not deter millions of Moroccans from continuing to demand an end to the monarchy. Moreover, they demand an immediate termination of the monarchy’s “deal of the century” with the Zionist entity.

As the streets of major cities across the kingdom reverberate with calls for change, it is evident that the era of monarchy in Morocco is drawing to a close, marking a significant turning point in the nation’s history.
