Morocco: Nurses Launch Three-Day Strike Against Government’s Neglect

ALGIERS-  Nurses and health technicians in Morocco have embarked, since Tuesday, on a new three-day strike in protest against the silence and neglect of the government and the Ministry of Health, and their failure to respond to demands and fulfill commitments.

The Independent Union of Nurses stated that this new escalatory strike, which paralyzes all health facilities except for emergency, intensive care, and critical care services, comes within the framework of a protest program aimed at confronting schemes aimed at destabilizing the professional stability of nurses and health technicians.

The strike is accompanied by regional and provincial protest activities, including demonstrations, marches, sit-ins, and collective iftars (fast-breaking meals), in addition to continuing to wear black armbands in all hospitals as an expression of the anger and discontent felt by this group.

The union reaffirms its commitment to all the gains of the public service, including the status of “civil servant” under the Ministry of Health, job stability, and wage centrality, rejecting the government’s attempts to shift the blame onto the nursing staff and manipulate their fate.

On the other hand, the union expressed its rejection of private healthcare institutions being given away under the pretext of innovative financing, considering it a gateway to undermining public health and a threat to the stability of healthcare professionals working in them.

The healthcare sector in Morocco has been experiencing tension for weeks, witnessing repeated protests and strikes by various sector unions, protesting the government’s procrastination in meeting the demands of healthcare professionals and calling for a swift response.
