ALGIERS- On Tuesday morning, the Independent Nurses’ Union in Morocco organized a significant protest in front of the Regional Health Directorate in Rabat. Hundreds of healthcare professionals, donned in their white uniforms, participated in the demonstration under the banner of “No Reform Without Justice for Nurses and Health Technicians.”

The union calls for an end to the deliberate policy of exclusion that has targeted nurses for over a decade and a half. This includes issues stemming from the 2006 agreement, known within nursing circles as the 100-dirham agreement, followed by the convoluted equation of 2017, causing widespread dissatisfaction and numerous victims due to the ministry’s arbitrary handling of nursing demands. The latest point of contention is the February 2022 agreement, which nurses and health technicians denounced as a farce, claiming that all categories were addressed except for nurses, considered the backbone of the system.

In a previous statement, the union warned the responsible ministry about the necessity of changing its policies and adopting a sound approach to ensure the success of the health sector reforms. They emphasized the need to rectify past mistakes that nurses and health technicians have endured for decades, particularly regarding their material demands.

The protest aims to draw attention to the systematic exclusion of nurses and health technicians and the inadequacy of previous agreements. The union seeks meaningful reforms that address the longstanding grievances and challenges faced by nurses, crucial contributors to the healthcare sector.
