Algiers, Algeria | February 7th, 2025 — Morocco is plunging deeper into political and security instability, with a series of unprecedented events shaking the foundations of the Makhzen’s rule. The continued absence of King Mohammed VI, coupled with growing internal crises, is further exposing the fragility of the regime. The latest developments include the dramatic escape of a high-ranking Moroccan intelligence officer and the unexplained death of a senior general, incidents that signal the erosion of state control and the looming collapse of the monarchy.

In a stunning blow to the Moroccan intelligence apparatus, Mahdi El-Hajjawi, a prominent official within the Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DST), has fled the country, seeking refuge in Spain. According to the Spanish daily El Confidencial, El-Hajjawi first attempted to escape with his family to France but was relentlessly pursued by Moroccan security forces, forcing him to change his route. This high-profile defection underscores the growing internal fractures within the kingdom’s intelligence community and the regime’s diminishing ability to maintain control over its own security operatives.

Meanwhile, tensions within the Moroccan military have reached new heights following the sudden and mysterious death of a senior general. The Makhzen has imposed a strict information blackout, refusing to disclose any details regarding the circumstances of his passing. This secrecy has fueled speculation about internal purges and power struggles within the ranks of the Royal Armed Forces, further exacerbating instability in a military already grappling with setbacks on multiple fronts.

The compounding crises have intensified calls for the end of the Alaouite monarchy, with analysts asserting that the regime’s downfall is now only a matter of time. The king’s prolonged absence, coinciding with mounting socio-political unrest and deepening economic woes, has left Morocco rudderless, widening the gap between the ruling elite and a disillusioned population.
