ALGIERS- Local branches of the National Union of Higher Education at the Abdelmalek Essaâdi University in Tetouan, Morocco, have condemned the university’s decision to close its campuses for four days, from March 20th to 23rd. The closure was aimed at preventing a student solidarity event with the Palestinian people, which was scheduled to be organized by the National Union of Moroccan Students.

In a statement, the union denounced the suspension of classes, considering the decision “a real setback in terms of university management and administration, unprecedented in history, not based on any legal basis, and contrary to all university norms and conventions.”

The union rejected “the university presidency’s unilateral decision to suspend classes and close university institutions without consulting the university council or the councils of the institutions affected by this shocking decision.” They emphasized that the decision coincided with the meeting of the university council, during which the suspension of classes was not discussed.

The union held the university presidency fully responsible for any disruption or hindrance to studies for the remainder of the current academic year, especially since it came at a critical juncture in the second semester and would inevitably have very negative effects on the normal course of academic activities and the remaining teaching time for the current academic season, given that most institutions have already completed the lion’s share of the semester in seven weeks.

They stressed that “university values can only support free discussion and interaction between ideas and support for just causes, far from decisions of prohibition and quarantine that take us years back and contradict the principles of democracy and freedom of expression.”

The union also condemned “the intensive security cordon, which included the vicinity of several institutions affiliated with Abdelmalek Essaâdi University, and the prevention of professors from accessing them” on Thursday, March 21st.
