ALGIERS- In a virtual conference organized by Sahrawi civil society activists, participants strongly criticized Morocco’s candidacy for the presidency of the Human Rights Council, deeming it “an insult to the international community and a blatant disregard for global human rights principles.”
The conference, held on Saturday, brought together diplomats, human rights defenders, and civil society activists to discuss the implications of Morocco’s candidacy. It unequivocally stated that Morocco’s bid for the presidency is untenable, given its documented violations of basic rights, emphasizing that a country engaged in such practices cannot be entrusted with defending human dignity on the global stage.
Highlighting Morocco’s actions of arrests, abductions, and degrading practices against the Sahrawi people in the occupied cities of Western Sahara, the conference pointed out that these actions, coupled with its military occupation of another country, underscore its lack of eligibility to lead the Human Rights Council. The council, tasked with upholding humanitarian foundations, cannot be presided over by a nation with a track record of violating fundamental rights.
The Sahrawi civil society has previously called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to reject Morocco’s candidacy for the upcoming term in 2024. Their plea is grounded in Morocco’s alarming human rights record, particularly in its military occupation of Western Sahara, where it has been accused of committing severe human rights violations. Furthermore, Morocco has been criticized for its reluctance to cooperate with UN mechanisms and its continuous targeting of human rights defenders, journalists, and others collaborating with UN bodies.
