Algiers, Algeria | November 22nd, 2024 — In a striking revelation, Ghali Zubair, the President of the Sahrawi Petroleum and Minerals Authority, has exposed the Moroccan regime’s strategic exploitation of the wealth of occupied Western Sahara to finance its military collaborations with the Zionist entity, further exacerbating its illegal occupation and war against the Sahrawi people. Zubair emphasized that foreign companies complicit in plundering these resources are predominantly Spanish and French, signaling a deep-rooted entanglement of European powers in Morocco’s illicit activities in the region.
Appearing on the “Guest of the International” program, Zubair detailed how Morocco has been systematically diverting Sahrawi resources, such as phosphate and marine wealth, into its military contracts, notably with the Zionist entity, to fuel its ongoing aggression against the indigenous Sahrawi population. He highlighted the opacity surrounding the true scale of these operations, with Moroccan authorities deliberately obfuscating the investments in occupied territories to sidestep international legal frameworks that prohibit the exploitation of these resources without the consent of the Sahrawi people.
According to Zubair’s estimates, the value of the resources stolen from Western Sahara has surpassed six billion euros, with the largest contributors being phosphate and marine resources. These figures starkly reveal the scale of exploitation, with Morocco continuing to enrich itself at the expense of a population struggling for its right to self-determination.
Zubair also condemned France’s recent announcement of future economic partnerships with Morocco in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, describing it as a severe setback for Paris. He stressed that this move, a desperate attempt by France to recover lost ground in the region after its setbacks in the Sahel and Algeria, is driven by Morocco’s normalization with the Zionist entity. The normalization of ties between Morocco and the Zionist entity, Zubair explained, has catalyzed closer economic and military cooperation, which has been further bolstered by France’s own dwindling influence in the region.
In response to these illegal activities, Zubair vowed to pursue legal action, confirming that the Sahrawi government would file lawsuits before the European Court of Justice against any companies or governmental institutions involved in the exploitation of Sahrawi resources. “The law is clear—no exploitation of occupied Sahrawi resources can proceed without the approval of the Sahrawi people. We will demand compensation, and those responsible will face legal consequences,” he declared.
This escalating crisis in Western Sahara underscores the urgent need for international accountability and adherence to the principles of international law. As foreign powers, especially Spain and France, continue to turn a blind eye to Morocco’s unlawful exploitation, the Sahrawi people’s struggle for justice and sovereignty becomes ever more critical. The world must recognize that the plundering of Sahrawi resources by foreign entities, in collusion with Morocco, represents a blatant violation of both human rights and international law.
