Algiers, Algeria | June 26th, 2024 — The Justice and Development Party (PJD) has called on Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, to provide clarity regarding the refueling and resupplying of a Zionist naval vessel at Tangier port. The PJD’s parliamentary group has demanded answers following media reports that the Zionist landing ship docked at Tangier during its voyage from the United States to the Zionist entity.

National Backlash

The incident has ignited substantial backlash, with many expressing concerns that such actions could undermine Morocco’s efforts to support the Palestinian cause amid ongoing atrocities in Gaza. The PJD emphasized the need to uphold Morocco’s stance on the Palestinian issue, particularly as King Mohammed VI leads the El Quds Committee.

Calls for Transparency

Abdellah Bouanou, leader of the PJD’s parliamentary group, highlighted the urgency of the matter in a written query. The group stressed the necessity for the government to disclose the facts surrounding the Zionist ship’s stopover in Tangier. It was noted that the ship, en route to the Zionist port of Haifa, utilized the Moroccan port after being denied access by Spain.

The PJD also urged the Foreign Minister to outline measures Morocco is taking to support Palestinians in Gaza and other territories. They warned that any support for Zionist military operations could damage Morocco’s reputation and its historical commitment to the Palestinian cause.

Media and Public Outcry

Media reports of the Zionist ship docking at Tangier have led to widespread condemnation. Various organizations and political entities have voiced their dismay, arguing that such actions are seen as tacit approval of the Zionist entity’s ongoing atrocities in Gaza, resulting in significant casualties and destruction.

Domestic and international observers have criticized Morocco’s facilitation of the Zionist ship, especially in light of the country’s recent alignment with the Abraham Accords and normalization of relations with the Zionist entity. Critics argue that these actions contradict Morocco’s declared solidarity with the Palestinian people and are seen as a betrayal of the broader Arab and Muslim world.

Historical Context and Controversy

Morocco and the criminal entity formally normalized relations in 2020 as part of the US-brokered Abraham Accords, which included US recognition of Morocco’s claims over Western Sahara. This move faced domestic and international criticism, with Moroccans viewing it as a compromise of “Morocco’s long-standing support for the Palestinian cause.”

The docking of the Zionist ship has exacerbated tensions, with accusations that Morocco is increasingly aligning itself with Zionist military interests. Reports indicate that the vessel, identified as the INS Komemiyut, docked at Tangier-Med Port on June 6, 2024, for fuel and supplies before continuing to Haifa. The ship, constructed in the United States, was en route from Pascagoula, Mississippi, and completed its journey to the Zionist entity on June 16, 2024.

Calls for Government Action

Various Moroccan NGOs and advocacy groups have denounced this shameful action, calling it an affront to Moroccan values and a violation of international resolutions. The National Working Group for Palestine and the Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Opposing Normalization have been vocal in their criticism, urging the government to take a firmer stance against such incidents.

Mohamed Riyahi, a prominent member of the Moroccan Association for Supporting the Causes of the Ummah, described the docking as a blatant disregard for the will of the Moroccan people, who overwhelmingly reject normalization with the criminal entity. He condemned the government’s actions, labeling them a betrayal of the Palestinian struggle and a stain on Morocco’s history.
