Morocco’s Trade with Zionist Entity Soars 124% Amid Gaza’s Ongoing Atrocities, Sparking Controversy

Algiers, Algeria | August 27th, 2024 — Recent reports from the news platform Atalayar reveal a dramatic escalation in trade relations between Morocco and the Zionist entity, with figures reaching unprecedented levels in 2024 despite the ongoing Zionist aggression against Gaza. Data from the Abraham Institute for Peace Agreements indicates that bilateral trade surged to €7.8 million in June 2024, a remarkable 124% increase compared to June 2023. For the first half of 2024, total trade between Morocco and the Zionist entity amounted to €48.9 million, representing a 64% increase from the same period the previous year.
This significant rise in economic activity occurs amidst a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, raising serious concerns about Morocco’s focus on economic gains over its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause. Critics argue that Morocco’s intensified economic ties with the Zionist entity during such a critical time may undermine its historical solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Since October 7, Morocco has witnessed widespread protests in cities including Tangier, Casablanca, and Rabat. Demonstrators have voiced vehement opposition to the government’s strengthening relationship with the Zionist entity, viewing these developments as a betrayal of Morocco’s traditional commitment to Palestinian rights.
The economic benefits of this increased trade, which spans sectors, such as agriculture, tourism, and services, are evident. However, the ethical and moral implications are increasingly contentious. Critics argue that the Abraham Accords, which have facilitated these enhanced relations, have shifted the focus from supporting Palestinian statehood to prioritizing economic and diplomatic interests.
The website further noted, “Despite the Moroccan government’s justification of these measures as ‘strategic moves’ to bolster its geopolitical position and economic resilience, the timing and consequences of these developments remain highly controversial. Morocco’s evolving stance, while part of a broader trend among Abraham Accords signatories—including the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt—has intensified scrutiny regarding its ethical and political motivations”.
Trade relations between the Zionist entity and other signatories, such as the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt, have also expanded, though within distinct contexts. For instance, trade between the Zionist entity and the UAE reached €250 million in June 2024, reflecting a modest 5% increase compared to June 2023.
In conclusion, while the surge in trade between Morocco and the Zionist entity is notable, it has spurred significant debate over Morocco’s unique position within the Abraham Accords framework.
