ALGIERS- A recent investigation by the French newspaper “L’Humanité” has shed light on Morocco’s use of Zionist-made drones in its military operations in Western Sahara, leading to civilian casualties, including children. The report, titled “In Morocco, ‘Israel’ exports its colonial expertise,” exposes Morocco’s utilization of drones manufactured by the Zionist occupation state to carry out attacks in the region.
According to the investigation, Morocco deployed drones, including strategic reconnaissance aircraft of the Hermes 900 model and tactical drones of the Hermes 450 model, both developed by the Zionist manufacturer “Elbit Systems,” from the military base at the occupied Es-Smara airport. These drones are equipped with air-to-surface missiles, enabling Morocco to conduct lethal airstrikes in Western Sahara.
This revelation is not new. Last July, The Intercept published an article titled “‘Israel’ Ramps up Drone Sales to Morocco for its Colonial War in Western Sahara,” which highlighted Morocco’s acquisition of various Zionist drones, including the WanderB, ThunderB, Heron TP, Harop loitering munitions, and Hermes 900s. Additionally, Morocco possesses Turkish and Chinese drones designed for combat purposes.
The use of these drones has resulted in civilian casualties and the displacement of Bedouin communities living in liberated areas controlled by the Polisario Front. Since 2021, 86 civilians, including two children, have been killed, and 170 others injured due to drone attacks.
The normalization of relations between Morocco and the Zionist entity in 2020 has facilitated cooperation between the two countries, particularly in defense. A significant milestone was the signing of a security cooperation agreement between the Moroccan and Zionist defense ministries, marking the first of its kind with an Arab country. This agreement aims to provide Morocco with advanced Zionist military technology.
As part of this collaboration, Elbit Systems, a Zionist defense contractor, announced the establishment of two drone factories in Morocco in 2023 as reported by Shai Cohen, head of the Zionist Liaison Office in Rabat.
