Movement of Society for Peace Advocates for “Broad and Inclusive National Dialogue”

Algiers, Algeria | September 22nd, 2024 — The Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) has called for the initiation of a “broad and inclusive national dialogue” aimed at fostering diverse viewpoints and facilitating discussions about Algeria’s future direction. This call was made following a meeting of its national executive bureau, chaired by party president Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, alongside the president of the National Council of Choura, Abderrahmane Benferhat.
In its statement, the MSP underscored the critical importance of dialogue as a means to explore new perspectives on Algeria’s political landscape and to embody the anticipated political partnership. This aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent commitment, articulated in his inaugural address at the Palais des Nations, to pursue “an open national dialogue” during his second term. The president emphasized the need for a genuine democratic process rather than a mere rhetorical exercise.
The MSP further highlighted the necessity for “in-depth political and legal reforms” concerning the laws that govern political life, particularly focusing on the electoral system and the communal and wilaya codes. The party is advocating for the urgent reform of the Independent National Authority for Elections (ANIE), emphasizing the need for a consensual approach to these legal modifications.
In addition to political reforms, the MSP proposed urgent changes to local authorities, suggesting a new territorial division that aligns with contemporary development aspirations.
On the international front, the MSP reaffirmed its “steadfast support for the resistance of the Palestinian people,” calling for immediate humanitarian actions to assist those affected in Gaza. The party also condemned the “terror policy” faced by Lebanon, expressing solidarity with Lebanese resistance efforts.
This multifaceted stance reflects the MSP’s commitment to fostering national unity while addressing both pressing political and humanitarian issues within Algeria and the wider region.
