Algiers, Algeria | July 30th, 2024 — On Dzair Tube’s “Remontada,” Mustapha Bounif delivered a fervent and critical commentary on recent international issues, focusing particularly on the Paris Olympics and the diplomatic relations between Algeria and France.
Critical Review of King Mohammed VI’s Speech
Bounif’s commentary commenced with a sharp critique of King Mohammed VI’s recent address on the Moroccan throne. The King’s speech, which raised concerns about Morocco’s water crisis and addressed the Palestinian issue, notably avoided the sensitive cause of Western Sahara and the French recognition of the purported Moroccan sovereignty over the territory. Bounif compared Mohammed VI’s rhetorical approach to that of historical figures notorious, as he claimed, for manipulating their followers, such as Hassan al-Sabbah of the Hashshashin. He suggested that while the comparison is figurative, it highlights the king’s tendency to distract and mislead the public, much like Sabbah’s historical tactics of psychological control.
Algeria-France Diplomatic Tensions
The discourse then shifted to the escalating diplomatic tensions between Algeria and France, particularly following France’s endorsement of the so-called Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. Bounif characterized the French stance as indicative of a colonial mindset that undermines the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He pointed to Algeria’s decision to recall its ambassador from Paris as a significant response reflecting the deteriorating state of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Scathing Critique of the Paris Olympics
Bounif also turned his critical lens on France’s handling of the Paris Olympics, describing the event as plagued by logistical failures and controversies. He cited reports of rodent infestations in Olympic venues and substandard accommodations, attributing these issues to France’s failure to manage the event effectively.
Bounif further criticized the opening ceremony, denouncing it as insensitive and controversial. He highlighted that the event included elements deemed inappropriate by various commentators, such as provocative drag performances and a contentious depiction of religious imagery, specifically a portrayal of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ featuring drag shows and homosexual themes. Bounif stressed that these contentious aspects reflected poorly on the event’s organization and undermined France’s ability to host such a prestigious international gathering.
