Consumer Protection Organization Confirms Market Readiness, Addresses Oil Availability and Distribution Oversight
Algiers, Algeria | February 19th, 2025 — Algeria’s markets will be well-stocked with essential commodities during the holy month of Ramadan, particularly table oil, according to Mustapha Zebdi, President of the Algerian Organization for Consumer Protection. In an exclusive statement to Dzair Tube, Zebdi reassured citizens that authorities and industry stakeholders are taking proactive measures to ensure a steady supply, despite seasonal surges in demand.
“During Ramadan, demand for certain products—especially table oil—rises significantly. To address this, additional production is being ramped up,” Zebdi stated. He emphasized that regulatory bodies will closely monitor distribution channels to ensure that both regular and supplemental stocks reach markets efficiently and fairly.
However, Zebdi also highlighted a growing concern: economic operators and traders increasingly competing with consumers for these essential products. “We have observed that some economic actors and retailers are stockpiling key goods, which can create unnecessary market pressure,” he noted.
The consumer protection chief further clarified that perceived shortages often stem not from an actual lack of supply but rather from brand preference among consumers. “For instance, when we receive complaints about oil shortages, it often turns out that a consumer is specifically looking for a particular brand rather than the product itself being unavailable in general,” he explained.
In a strategic move to ease market strain, Zebdi praised the decision to mandate pastry professionals to use Agrodiv’s Safia brand oil. This measure, he asserted, is both practical and well-calculated, as it will allow more widely preferred brands to remain accessible to households without creating undue market stress.
