Algiers, Algeria | August 11th, 2024 — The Naâma province is poised for a major economic boost with the announcement of a new iron ore processing plant, established in collaboration with two Chinese firms. The project, which will process iron ore from the Gara Djebilet mine in Tindouf, is scheduled to begin construction by the end of this year or early next year.

Chinese Delegation Evaluates Regional Resources

On Saturday, a delegation from Chinese companies SDM and CAMC, in partnership with the Algerian Iron and Steel Company (FERAAL), visited the Naâma wilaya to evaluate the site’s readiness. The delegation assessed technical resources, site preparation in Harchaïa, and key logistical factors such as land readiness, energy and water supply, infrastructure, and transportation networks.

Project Scope and Economic Impact

The new plant, to be located in the Harchaïa industrial zone, will process up to 9 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate annually. Spanning approximately 500 hectares, it will employ advanced technology to produce “semi-finished iron ore squares,” crucial for reinforcing concrete. The project is expected to create around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

Timeline and Infrastructure Development

The plant is slated to commence operations in 2028. A key component of the project involves constructing a new railway line to transport iron ore from Gara Djebilet to Naâma. This 318 km railway segment will facilitate efficient logistics and enhance the region’s connectivity.

Government Support and Future Prospects

Local authorities in Naâma are fully committed to supporting the project, ensuring the necessary resources and infrastructure are in place. This initiative is expected to stimulate regional development and enhance Algeria’s presence in the global iron ore market.

The establishment of this processing plant highlights Algeria’s dedication to boosting its industrial sector and fostering economic growth through strategic international partnerships and investment in essential industries.
