Algiers, Algeria | October 13th, 2024 — This Monday marks the opening of the largest energy and hydrogen exhibition in North Africa and the Mediterranean basin, “NAPEC 2024,” which is expected to attract leading global energy players from Africa, Europe, the United States, and Asia. A key focus of this year’s event, which has added hydrogen to its official name, will be the burgeoning hydrogen sector, alongside a major milestone—the launch of Algeria’s first hydrocarbon tender since 2014.
According to the event organizers, NAPEC 2024, which will span three days, has gained significant international stature. The Ministry of Energy will serve as the event’s diamond sponsor, along with key participation from Sonatrach and the National Agency for the Valorization of Hydrocarbon Resources (ALNAFT). Notable attendees will include ministers from sectors, such as vocational training, environment, and renewable energies, as well as representatives from Sonelgaz and other major energy bodies. Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, will personally inaugurate the event.
Global energy corporations, such as U.S. giants ExxonMobil and Chevron, Italy’s Eni, France’s TotalEnergies, and Indonesia’s Pertamina, are among the key sponsors. Other major energy firms, including Spain’s Repsol and Cepsa, Norway’s Equinor, and U.S. company Baker Hughes, will also participate as official sponsors.
During the event, over 200 work sessions will be organized across 20 categories, featuring international experts in the energy and hydrocarbon sectors. These sessions will provide valuable insights and expertise from global leaders, decision-makers from national and international oil companies, integrated energy companies, and technology providers.
NAPEC 2024 will delve into at least 34 key topics related to energy, including energy transition, carbon footprint reduction, renewable energy, clean energy solutions, hydrogen, collaboration, partnerships, investments, oil and gas exploration, and the development of unconventional resources such as shale oil and gas. It will also address natural gas and LNG (liquefied natural gas) production, technological innovations in the sector, and much more.
In addition to local leaders, such as officials from the Ministry of Energy, Sonatrach, and ALNAFT, international energy leaders will join the discussions. Notable participants include John Ardill, Vice President of Exploration and New Ventures at ExxonMobil, Liz Schwarze, Vice President of Exploration at Chevron, and Giorgio Vicini, General Manager of Eni Algeria, among others. Global energy experts will also bring their expertise to the forefront of these discussions.
The discussions will cover topics, such as hybrid energy systems, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), refining and petrochemical solutions, electricity generation, digitalization, mechanization, engineering, procurement, construction, pipelines, and storage, as well as seismic surveys to estimate oil and gas reserves.
One of the key highlights of this edition will be the launch of Algeria’s first hydrocarbon exploration and production tender since 2014, by ALNAFT. This tender is the first under the new hydrocarbons law enacted in 2019 and aims to attract international investors for the development of potential oil and gas fields.
Moreover, several major agreements are expected to be signed on the sidelines of the exhibition between Algeria and international companies, particularly in the green hydrogen sector, including a significant partnership with an Italian entity.
