ALGIERS- A series of devastating wildfires that swept through 16 provinces have left the nation reeling, but it has also showcased the indomitable spirit of its people and the government’s efficient crisis response. The fires, which consumed vast forest areas, jungles, and agricultural crops, resulted in the loss of 34 lives, injuries to dozens, and the evacuation of 1,500 citizens. The provinces of Bejaia, Bouira, and Jijel were the hardest hit, with the outbreak of nearly a hundred fires fueled by strong winds.
In the face of this catastrophe, the nation mobilized its significant material and human resources to confront the raging infernos. A staggering 8,000 aid workers, supported by 529 trucks and aerial firefighting means, worked tirelessly to bring the fires under control.
The Minister of the Interior, Local Assemblies, and Urban Planning, Mr. Brahim Merad, personally supervised the firefighting operations in Bejaia, underscoring the government’s commitment to managing the crisis effectively. The Ministry of National Solidarity, Family, and Women’s Issues set up a crisis cell in coordination with local authorities to provide care and support to affected families.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development appealed to citizens to exercise caution and avoid entering forests during the unusual climatic conditions. They also urged citizens to contribute to awareness campaigns about the dangers of forest fires and report any fire-related incidents to the appropriate authorities.
The Ministry of Health acted promptly to treat the wounded and provide medical support on-site. A dedicated follow-up cell was formed to ensure adequate care for all affected individuals. Thanks to these measures, no shortages of medical supplies or equipment were reported.
The nation is mourning the loss of 34 brave citizens, including ten soldiers from the People’s National Army, who lost their lives while battling the wildfires. In response to this tragic event, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, assuring them of the state’s unwavering solidarity during these trying times.
Lieutenant General Saïd Chanegriha, on behalf of the People’s National Army, also extended his sincere condolences to the families of the martyred soldiers and their colleagues. The Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, Mr. Saleh Goudjil, and Prime Minister, Mr. Aimene Benabdelrahmane, offered their deepest sympathies to the families of all the victims.
As the nation mourns, investigative authorities have initiated a thorough examination of the fires’ causes. The Attorney General at the Court of Bejaia, along with counterpart in Jijel, ordered the opening of preliminary investigations to uncover the origins of the fires. Should any criminal or subversive nature be discovered, the cases will be handed over to the Anti-Terrorism and Organized Crime Department of the Sidi M’hamed Tribunal.
During these dark times, the nation has seen the best of humanity rise to the occasion. The heroic efforts of the aid workers, the resilience of the affected communities, and the efficient government response have shown that when faced with adversity, the nation can unite and overcome. As recovery efforts continue, the country stands united, determined to heal, rebuild, and emerge stronger than ever before.
