Algiers- Algeria, May 10, 2024 – Yesterday, at the Moufdi-Zakaria Cultural Palace in Algiers, Minister of Culture and Arts Soraya Mouloudji inaugurated the 9th National Festival of Women’s Creation, set to continue until May 17.
Accompanied by the Ministers of Environment and Renewable Energies, Fazia Dahleb, and Tourism and Handicrafts, Mokhtar Didouche, alongside Festival Commissioner Sid Ali Benmerabet, Minister Mouloudji toured the various exhibition stands. After visiting displays dedicated to traditional Algerian attire, jewelry, and crafts, the minister encouraged participants to contribute to the “valorization and preservation of various elements of the national heritage,” including the practices and craftsmanship associated with these ancestral trades.
In her opening speech, Minister Mouloudji emphasized the festival’s significance, highlighting it as “a showcase of creativity aimed at promoting the creations of Algerian women” who have consistently “contributed to the valorization and preservation of heritage.” The event, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Arts, symbolizes the state’s efforts to promote culture and preserve national heritage, aligned with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitment to “promote the role and place of Algerian women in society.” Women, she added, are integral to development across various sectors, notably in politics, culture, and economics.
On the festival’s first day, various spaces, including an academic exhibition on costume history, live workshops, areas for artisans and start-ups, and museums, were set up to welcome visitors. Held as part of the Heritage Month (April 18 – May 18) under the theme “Costumes and Adornments, Heritage Through History,” the exhibition aims to showcase the skills and knowledge preserving clothing heritage, including embroidery, sewing, and jewelry-making.
Promoting Algerian Women’s Creations and Innovations
Designers of traditional clothing, creators, and artisans specializing in traditional costume and adornments from different regions of the country will present their creations with a modern perspective. The program includes space for artisans to display their products and creations, while start-ups in the artistic domain will participate for the first time, introducing innovative approaches.
These companies will contribute to the creation of an online platform called “be djazairi” (be Algerian), aimed at providing international visibility to Algerian cultural heritage by featuring companies specializing in clothing creation. To add an academic aspect to the event, an exhibition on costume history through women’s creation and its role in conserving and safeguarding clothing heritage is planned.
For training in preserving and transmitting know-how in the field, artisans will conduct interactive workshops, showcasing their creativity and skills to the public. Master classes dedicated to art embroidery, jewelry making, and design are also part of this 9th edition. Specialized training schools in embroidery, jewelry making, stone cutting, weaving, and museums presenting clothing and jewelry collections will also participate.
In addition to the exhibition, conferences on costume and jewelry led by academics and specialists in clothing heritage are scheduled. Since 2010, under the Ministry of Culture and Arts’ patronage, the National Cultural Festival of Women’s Creation aims to promote Algerian women’s creations and innovations in art and crafts.
