The Minister of Fisheries and Fish Production, Hicham Sofiane Salaouatchi said Tuesday in Algiers that national fish production should increase to 116,000 tonnes by the end of 2022, an increase of 19% compared to 2021.
In a speech delivered during the official celebration of World Food Day, Mr. Salaouatchi indicated that fish production in Algeria amounted to 97,508 tons in 2021 and will have to increase to 116,000 tons by the end of the year. current year.
According to the Minister, this increase in production should increase the ratio of fish consumption per person from 2.93 kg/year to 3.26 kg at the end of 2022, thanks to the “great momentum” that the sector is experiencing and indicators positive results, including the “considerable” increase in national supply.
At the same time, several steps are taken to consolidate the capacities of the national maritime fleet, to develop marine and continental aquaculture projects as well as deep-sea fishing and to increase the contribution of the fishing sector in achieving food security.
Mr. Salaouatchi mentioned the investments made in his sector, through the removal of obstacles on 117 investment projects during the period 2021-2022 at the level of 28 wilayas. These projects will allow the creation of 2,350 new jobs, adds the minister.
He also reported on 189 new investment projects within the framework of assistance mechanisms for the creation of micro-enterprises.
In addition, the number of projects benefiting from the innovative idea and start-up label in the field of fishing and aquaculture rose to 49, the majority of which are in the process of being implemented, according to the minister.
For her part, the Minister of Environment and Renewable Energies, Samia Moualfi, highlighted the role of her sector in achieving food security, by working to bring together the conditions for sustainable production.
She affirmed, in this context, that the environmental policy in this area consists in generalizing good environmental practices, preserving biodiversity, ensuring the transition of the economy towards sustainable consumption and production methods, moving towards the economy green and reduce the environmental effects linked to the production and service cycle.
In this regard, the Minister recalled the results of the project linked to the protection of the environment and biodiversity of the Algerian coast (PEBLA), launched in 2020, which has brought together, to date, 300 people in vegetable oil and organic honey production cooperatives, emphasizing the positive impact of these cooperatives on local populations through the improvement of household incomes and social conditions.
