Algiers, Algeria | August 13th, 2024 — The National Organization of Algerian Journalists (NOAJ) held a pivotal meeting on August 13, 2024, focusing on the evolving landscape of digital journalism in Algeria. The meeting brought together directors and representatives from accredited electronic media outlets, providing a platform to discuss the current challenges and opportunities within the sector, particularly concerning financial sustainability and regulatory issues.
Addressing Socio-Professional Challenges
The session was part of a broader initiative by the NOAJ to engage with various media sectors through periodic meetings. Past discussions have included interactions with print media, international press representatives, and audiovisual media, all aimed at addressing sector-specific issues and exploring solutions.
At the recent gathering, key challenges faced by digital journalists were highlighted. Central to the discussions was the need for a formal agreement with the National Agency for Communication, Publication, and Advertising (ANEP) to secure public advertising for online media platforms. Participants stressed the importance of implementing President Tebboune’s initiative to bolster the role of electronic media, emphasizing that online platforms should be integrated into the framework for public procurement advertising, extending beyond the traditional scope of print media, as outlined in the Cabinet meeting of May 2024.
Electoral Coverage and Professional Standards
With the presidential elections set for September 7, 2024, the meeting underscored the crucial role of electronic media in ensuring fair and comprehensive electoral coverage. The NOAJ President Slimane Abdouche called upon electronic media representatives to maintain high standards of professionalism and adhere strictly to legal regulations throughout the electoral campaign. Emphasis was placed on providing objective and balanced coverage of political activities while fostering national awareness and encouraging active citizen participation in the democratic process.
Commitment to Ethical Journalism
The meeting concluded with a resolute commitment from attendees to uphold the nation’s higher interests and counteract any attempts to undermine the electoral process. The NOAJ President highlighted the importance of complying with Article 03 of the Organic Law on Media, which mandates respect for human dignity, Article 20 on information accuracy, and Article 35 on maintaining ethical standards.
In a symbolic gesture of dedication to ethical reporting, the directors of the electronic media outlets signed a Code of Ethics for the upcoming presidential elections. This document reaffirms their commitment to professional integrity and responsible journalism, ensuring that the media plays a constructive role in the electoral process and the broader democratic framework.
