Algiers, Algeria | October 29th, 2024 — In a landmark move aimed at addressing persistent concerns of international correspondents working in Algeria, the National Organization of Algerian Journalists (NOAJ), led by President Slimane Abdouche, has taken a major step toward securing social security coverage for foreign journalists stationed within the country. This latest initiative underscores NOAJ’s commitment to elevating the standards of professional and social protection for media professionals.
Following an initial meeting in August, where journalists highlighted the critical issue of lacking insurance coverage, the NOAJ convened a high-level coordination session at the CNAS headquarters in Ben Aknoun, Algiers. Attended by NOAJ representatives, including President Abdouche and Karim Kendouli, head of NOAJ’s International Press Committee, as well as CNAS senior officials and a delegation of international journalists, the meeting explored feasible solutions to close this gap in social security for accredited correspondents.
In this constructive dialogue, NOAJ presented a mutually beneficial proposal that was met with enthusiasm from both the correspondents and CNAS representatives. This joint initiative, spearheaded by NOAJ, reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to providing a more secure work environment for international journalists, who act as de facto ambassadors for Algeria in the global media landscape. The proposal marks the second major step taken by NOAJ in recent weeks to promote better conditions for the international press corps working within Algeria’s legal framework.
International media representatives expressed their appreciation for NOAJ’s active role in advocating for their rights and supporting them on professional issues that had remained unaddressed for years. They acknowledged that this latest step by NOAJ reflects an elevated standard of engagement and support, setting a new benchmark for press support and operational improvements.
The NOAJ reaffirmed its open-door policy, welcoming all Algerian journalists to engage with the organization as it doubles its efforts to support the social and professional needs of journalists across Algeria. By fostering a more supportive environment for local and international journalists, NOAJ aims to enhance the integrity of Algerian journalism in line with the nation’s Constitution and media laws.
